Dr. Dong Guo and Dr. Anyi Wang from Climate School's Research Program on Sustainability Policy and Management (SPM) participated in the "China’s New Sustainable Development Practice Towards Carbon Neutrality" Event, held at #COP29 China Pavilion. The Event published "The Evaluation Report on the Sustainable Development of China (2024)", which highlights the sustainability achievements of 30 provinces and 110 cities in China and features case studies from several global cities.
In his keynote speech, Dr. Guo argued cities play a substantial role in global sustainable development, particularly considering the fact that population, consumption of natural resources and energy, as well as carbon emission all concentrate in urban settlements, and have vast potential of sustainability improvement through city-level governance, policies, and technological adoption. However, the current lack of comprehensive data for sustainability metrics poses a significant challenge, requiring global collaboration to improve data availability, reliability, and transparency.
Additionally, Dr. Wang presented the key findings of the long awaited project "The Evaluation Report on the Sustainable Development of China (2024)" on Chinese cities and global cities comparison, and introduced exemplar case studies from selected global cities across various aspects of urban sustainability.
